Food Allergy and Intolerance Products Market Worth $26 billion

10% of the US population have difficulties digesting gluten. Diagnosis of Celiac disease is however, very low, at less than 1%.

Alimento Seguro (11/08/2011) -- By 2017, analysts believe that the market for food allergy and intolerance products will be worth in excess of $26 billion, according to a new report available from companiesandmarkets.com. The recent burst of growth in the food intolerance market has been attributed to increased incidence of digestive health concerns, improvements to product labelling, and consumer interest in gluten and wheat-free diets.

Interest and demand for food intolerance products has soared in recent years; the market increasing in size and scope in what was originally a very niche area. Demand has been driven by several factors, including an increase in the number of diagnoses of food intolerances and food allergies, consumer self diagnosis, and general lifestyle interests such as weight loss.

As consumers seek alternatives to traditional ingredients such as dairy milk, eggs, wheat, gluten, lactose and nuts, manufacturers have noted the trend and reacted by innovating in this category. Current R&D activities are focusing on improvements to food allergy product taste and texture; while recent years have seen an influx of baking ingredients, biscuits, chocolate and savoury snack products, amongst others, particularly in the gluten-free segment.

The biggest market for food allergy and intolerance products is the US, where it is estimated that around 10% of the population have difficulties digesting gluten. Diagnosis of Celiac disease is however, very low, at less than 1%.

Over 130 notable companies active in the food allergy market are profiled within the report, including Alpro UK Ltd, Amy's Kitchen, Dr Schar, Enjoy Life Natural Brands LLC, General Mills, Gluten Free Foods Ltd, Glutino Food Group, Livwell Ltd, Nutrition Point Ltd, Pamela's Products and Semper AB.
